Business succession in family businesses

According to estimates of the IfM, about 30,000 family businesses are in the process of being handed over every year, which affects approx. 480,000 employees. The IfM Bonn estimates differ from those of other institutes by considering only those companies that exceed a minimum profitability threshold. A comparison of our estimates with the observed number of business successions in 2016 (cf. the Gewerbeanzeigenstatistik) shows that the estimation procedure of the IfM Bonn reflects the actual number of company successions well.
