We examined the impacts on the founding success of academics in German universities over a period of seven years. We define founding success as a three-step process: planning progress in the pre-foundation phase (I), business foundation (II) and early development of young enterprises (III). While creating inventions, business networks and using entrepreneurshipsupporting services are significant drivers for founding success overall, deficits within the business model are main obstacles for founding success in the pre-foundation phase. Based on the results, previous economic policy measures can be examined for their suitability and adjusted for each phase of the founding success.
