Professor Friederike Welter explained in her keynote speech at the University of Siegen's annual event in mid-October why entrepreneurship needs fresh perspectives rather than old myths, using the example of Silicon Valley entrepreneurship: "Silicon Valley entrepreneurship is associated with rapid and outstanding business growth. However, the big unicorns or decacorns are the absolute exception."
It should also not be forgotten that Silicon Valley entrepreneurship primarily produces business-to-consumer innovations that everyone is familiar with. In contrast, Germany's industrial SME sector, for example, excels in business-to-business innovations that are largely unknown to the general public. In Professor Friederike Welter's view, it is therefore important to preserve and strengthen the positive image of the SME sector. After all, in addition to its economic importance, it also fulfils an important social function.
